Let us explain why MRED (the Chicagoland MLS) pulled its listing feed from Zillow.

Sellers have always had choices when it comes to how and when their home is marketed. One of the tools available is the Private Listing Network, which allows homes to be shared with all agents in the MLS while giving sellers control over if and when their listing is syndicated publicly.

For some sellers, that privacy matters. Sometimes it’s personal. Sometimes it’s strategic: testing pricing, attracting only serious buyers, or simply not wanting interior photos displayed all over the internet.

Zillow announced they would permanently block any listing that started in the private network, even if the seller later decided to go public. MRED’s response was simple: if Zillow wants access to MLS listings, they need to follow the same rules and display all homes fairly. Otherwise, they lose access to the feed altogether.

At the end of the day, this is about seller choice and who controls how a home is marketed.

Let’s be real: real estate agents have always had, and always will have, the most up-to-date inventory. We have access to the entire MLS, private listings, and properties coming soon to the market.
And if buyers want to search on their own, there are still plenty of great sites available including Homes.com, Realtor.com, .com, Redfin, and more.
