A little backstory to the statue in Pioneers Park.
On this day in 1935, the "Smoke Signal" statue in Lincoln's Pioneers Park was dedicated. Sculpted of bronze-colored cast iron by Ellis Luis Burman and funded by the Works Progress Administration Program, the 15-foot 5-ton sculpture depicts a Native American man directing the smoke of a fire to create a smoke signal.
Dedicated to all Nebraska Native American tribes, the dedication ceremony was attended by over 100 tribal members from the Omaha, Ponca, Sioux, and Winnebago tribes.
