See that gap at the bottom of the stairs?
That's on purpose.
Atomic's building the stairs and framing out a cutout at the base — because Flatworx is coming in behind us to pour the patio underneath this deck. Stairs land clean into fresh concrete instead of onto dirt, and nobody has to come back and patch around them later.
That's the kind of thing you only get right when the deck crew and the concrete crew work together. Two separate contractors, and this becomes a phone call, a delay, and a seam you can see forever.
Stair stringers have to be dead accurate anyway. Add a pour underneath and the tolerances get tighter.

You guessed it. It's a deck.
Remember the saw post from last week? Here's what all those cuts turned into.
Papillion job. An engineered 14' x 20' deck in new treated lumber — posts, beam, and joists, all sized and set for the load.
The homeowner already had a deck. It just wasn't cutting it. What they didn't have was a place to actually sit outside with friends and entertain. Now they do — 280 square feet of it.
A few things in these photos that matter more than they look:
Those diagonal braces aren't part of the finished build. They're temporary, holding everything plumb and square while we set the rest. They come off later.
The posts sit on concrete piers. Footings and piers poured by our sister company FlatWorx Concrete. Having a concrete crew we trust means footings go in right and on schedule — most deck delays aren't the deck, they're the concrete.
The ground cloth is there because we're not tracking a summer of dirt across somebody's grass and patio.
Still plenty left — decking, railing, finish work. We'll show you where it lands.

Every deck starts here.

Posts on piers. Beams up. Braced square.

The diagonals are temporary — they keep everything honest until the structure locks itself in.

You'll never see this part again once the decking goes down. It's also the only part that matters when the deck is fifteen years old and full of people.

Do the bones right, the rest is easy.

**This is the part of your deck nobody ever sees. It's the part holding everything up.**

Notching the columns for the support beam.

Here's why it matters. The beam carries the joists. The joists carry the decking. The decking carries you, your grill, and every person standing on it at your kid's graduation party.

That whole chain lands on this cut.

A notched column means the beam sits *inside* the post — the wood itself is carrying the weight, not just the hardware. Bolt a beam to the side of a post and you're asking a handful of fasteners to hold your entire deck. It works until it doesn't.

Cut it right and the load goes straight down through solid lumber into the footing, the way gravity wants it to.

Nobody will ever compliment you on this notch. It'll be buried under decking by Friday. But it's the difference between a deck that feels solid in year fifteen and one that starts moving in year four.

Day in the life.

One dead saw battery can wreck a whole afternoon. Nothing kills momentum like standing around waiting on a charger while the sun's still good.

Not today. Batteries in place, sun's out, cuts are clean.

This is the part of the job nobody films — no big reveal, no before-and-after. Just a guy, a saw, and a line to follow. But every finished build you've ever seen started as a couple hundred cuts exactly like this one.

We could've sold this homeowner a brand new deck. We didn't.

Older home in the Lincoln Country Club neighborhood — the kind with real character. The deck looked fine from ten feet away. Up close, the decking was rotting and the whole thing had a wobble you feel in your stomach when you step out with a cup of coffee.

Here's what we found: the bones were good. Framing was solid. What was gone was the surface on top and the support underneath.

So we redecked it and set a 6x6 post to carry the load. Original structure stayed. New decking, real support, and a deck that doesn't move when you walk on it.

Honest take: plenty of guys would've quoted a full tear-out on this one. Easier to sell, bigger ticket. But if your framing is sound, a rebuild means paying for lumber you already own. This homeowner got the same result for a fraction of the cost — and kept the deck that came with the house.

Not every deck is worth saving. But you deserve to know which one you've got before somebody hands you a demo quote.

3 signs your deck needs looked at (before somebody sells you a new one)

Most decks don't fail all at once. They give you warnings for two or three years first. Here's what to watch for.

1. The wobble.
Walk out and stop in the middle. Does anything move? A deck should feel like a floor, not a boat. Side-to-side sway usually means the posts or the connection to the house are giving up — and that's the failure that actually hurts somebody.

2. Soft spots underfoot.
Press a screwdriver into the boards near the house and around the stairs. If it sinks in easy, that board is done. Water sits longest where the deck meets siding and where feet hit the same spot every day, so that's where rot shows up first.

3. Rot where the post meets the ground.
Get down and look at the base of each post. Dark, spongy, or crumbling at the dirt line means the post is failing from the bottom up — even if the top six feet look perfect. This one is easy to miss and expensive to ignore.

Honest take: finding one of these does not mean you need a new deck. We redecked a home in the Lincoln Country Club neighborhood last week that had two of the three — the framing underneath was solid, so it got new decking and a 6x6 post for support instead of a tear-out. Same result, fraction of the cost.

The point of checking is knowing what you've got before somebody hands you a demo quote. Sound bones are worth keeping.
