On the corner of 8th and Q Street, Jones, Douglas & Company first constructed 800 Q St. as a cracker bakery in 1886. Eventually helping to supply NABISCO, the facility was a part of the boom of self-stable food after the Civil War.
The Henkle and Joyce Hardware Company purchased the building in 1910, and began utilizing it as a wholesale and storage building. Part of the growing Haymarket, at the time populated by wholesalers and industry, it was a stable presence as Lincoln changed around it. Check out those street car lines at the top right!
Henkle and Joyce quickly expanded, acquiring the former Star Van and Storage building, which makes up Arena's east section, by 1915. At this point, the building's destinies became intertwined. While not yet physically connected, common ownership held these two structures together into the 21st century.
After purchased the buildings in 2013, they were physically connected, and built upon creating what is now Arena Lofts. As evident from historical records, including the images above, this is not the first time that housing, commerce, and work have all occurred on the same block. Arena Lofts is proud to have restored, and expanded upon these historic landmarks.
