Residents at Van Dorn Villa had a spooktacular time on October 30th, surrounded by goblins, witches, and all sorts of festive characters. They enjoyed a wonderful meal and lively entertainment provided by the Nebraska band Dorothy’s Dishes.

Specialist 4th Class and Van Dorn Villa resident Bill Schommer was recently honored with a Quilt of Valor in recognition of his dedicated service to our country. Bill served from 1967–1969 as an Army Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne RTO Division during the Vietnam War. He is also a proud recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while serving .

The quilt was presented by Kathy Miller of Lincoln Quilts of Valor #556 and holds special meaning, as it was the first quilt created by our own Villa Stitchers to honor a veteran.

Thank you, Bill, for your service and for protecting the United States of America. Your courage and sacrifice are deeply appreciated.

Meet Vanesta Gray, our oldest resident at Van Dorn Villa and the oldest resident in Nebraska. At 111 years of age, Vanesta is the 37th oldest citizen in the United States.

She was born on September 16, 1914 on the family farm located between Obert and Wynot Nebraska. She was born second of six children.

Many family members and friends, along with the residents of Van Dorn Villa came together to honor Vanesta’s long life and her 111th birthday.

Vanesta is an avid fan of the Huskers Volleyball team. She is seen here with a signed volleyball from their new head coach, Dani Busboom Kelly.

How many 55+ communities can brag about a library like the one at Van Dorn Villa? This library is maintained by our library committee and they do an excellent job.

Our committee is always adding new books to the library and keeps up with the latest authors. We have over 6000 books, several magazines, and a daily paper is kept for our residents to enjoy.

Residents who have purchased a condo state one of the main reasons they purchased a condo at Van Dorn Villa is the library. All funding for library books and supplies is generated by the committee and the HOA budget is not affected. Committee approved funding has also supported occasional needs of Van Dorn Villa.
