The question was asked recently on a friend's page. "Why does my (red) oak hold all her leaves so late?" I knew part of it, but had to research more.

So, I looked in the book titled THE NATURE OF OAKS by Douglas Tallamy as well as some online searches and reading.

So, it is a predator deterrent. Predators, as in deer, moose & elk (and formerly Mastodon and mammoth) look to eat the buds on trees created at leaf fall. Marcescent trees (like beech and oak) leave their dead leaves on to protect the buds.

It is also hypothesized the trees leave them on late to capture more snow and ice, thus moistening the soil beneath even more so.

A final hypothesis is that the leaves linger until spring so that they can start a spring time mulching process which creates more nutrients for the trees.

Fascinating!
