I love when I get the opportunity to bring light to certain issues. Although it maybe hard to articulate the complexities of Fair Housing in a short less than 2 minute news segement but here is a follow up.

The narrative that Atlanta's housing market is "overvalued" often oversimplifies a multifaceted issue. Real estate value isn't just about home prices—it's a combination of costs including taxes, insurance, HOA dues, and infrastructure. As a Black real estate professional, I view Atlanta's market through a different lens, acknowledging the historical exploitation and neglect faced by communities, akin to the experiences in Detroit.

For years, practices like redlining hindered investment in these areas, leaving them underserved until recent gentrification efforts began addressing these imbalances. However, the rising property taxes—often 30-50% in a single year—and increasing insurance costs are putting a strain on homeowners, affecting their ability to qualify for loans or refinance. This financial strain can create a misleading impression that homes are overpriced when, in reality, the issue lies in the rapid increase in financial burdens on residents.

Addressing the complexities of the housing market requires a focus on fair housing and equitable resource distribution. The rise in Detroit’s median income is promising, it’s even better than most areas of Atlanta, but it must be paired with fair job opportunities, access to homeownership, and balanced resource allocation which it seems to be doing. For both cities, fostering vibrant, inclusive communities means looking beyond surface-level metrics and ensuring that economic and housing policies support all residents equitably.

I loved the engagement and the creative expression of flags at the end. I am so thankful for my team that helped coordinate this event Brandon Franchiz Pennamon EElena Hudson Jasmine Denise Cultural Arts Council Douglasville / Douglas County Douglas County Chamber discussion was focused on Understanding Heritage, Creating Balance through Unseen Bias . Conversation weighted in on the GA State flag and the updated pledge of Allegiance. Although it was a sensitive topic that could have gone left, we created a brave and safe space to find our common ground. I love the support and trust from everyone in the room.
