Mortgage applications rose for the fourth straight week as homebuyers and refinancers rushed to lock in rates near their lowest levels in three years.
Applications were up 3.2% for the week ending March 6, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Purchase applications jumped 7.8% from the prior week and were 11% higher than a year ago. Refinance applications were up 81% year over year.
The average 30-year fixed rate sits at 6%, down sharply from 6.63% a year ago and just above the recent low of 5.98%, the lowest rate since September 2022.
