The Big Dam Bridge in Little Rock is the longest bridge in North America built specifically for people on foot and on bikes.

It stretches 4,226 feet across the Arkansas River, riding on top of Murray Lock and Dam No. 7. Cars have never crossed it. Neither have trains. That is what earns it the record.

The deck sits about 90 feet above the river and 30 feet above the dam. It is 14 feet wide and holds more than 3 million pounds of steel. Eight observation areas let you stop and take in the view.

And that name? It came from a slip of the tongue that stuck. Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines, frustrated over financing, told a quorum court session, "We're going to build that dam bridge." The span was supposed to be called the Murray Bridge. Nobody remembers that now.

It opened Sept. 30, 2006, after about eight years of planning and construction. The price tag came in around $12.8 million.

Today it links Murray Park in Little Rock to Cook's Landing Park in North Little Rock and anchors the Arkansas River Trail. Every September it hosts the Big Dam Bridge 100, the state's biggest cycling tour.
