Starbucks workers at locations in North Little Rock, Jacksonville, Paragould and Jonesboro were informed Thursday that their stores’ last day of business will be Saturday following an announcement this week that the company will close hundreds of locations in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Bustling corner then and now!

Welcome to this week's Flashback Friday post. Recognize this intersection? Remember that checkerboard roof?

The photograph of the service station attendant at Lakewood Texaco (4824 JFK) on the southeast corner of JFK and McCain appeared in the Northeast High School Charger yearbook in 1971. Behind the attendant was the McCain/47th Street intersection at JFK, busy with traffic crossing the thoroughfare. Jerry Gardner ran the Texaco station. Starbucks occupies the site today.

In the background of the photo, on the west side of JFK, was the Lakewood Phillips 66 station on the northwest corner of JFK and 47th, where Hardees Hamburgers sits today. Tony’s Pizza, with the red and white checkerboard rooftop, was next to the Phillips 66 station.

Also at the intersection but not in the photograph was the Lakewood Conoco station on the southwest corner of JFK and 47th, across the street from Texaco. On the northeast corner of the intersection (not shown) was Hanson’s restaurant, now site of 7 Brew coffee. Next door to Hanson’s was Petty’s Drug Store.
