Some artists don't just break ground—they make it powerful! 🌸

October 2024, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the Artspace Windgate Campus with a creative twist.

Instead of a plain shovel, local artist Tanya Hollifield turned the ceremonial shovel into a one-of-a-kind work of art saying "Palestine is represented by the Tatreez and the poppy flowers; their traditions, culture and resilience. They have been digging their loved one's from under rubble of their bombed homes as we break ground for a home for art and artist. I hope they will soon be using the shovel to break ground in rebuilding their homes and towns."

Tanya Hollifield is the recipient of an Arkansas Arts Council Artist Fellowship Award for her public engagement work and Peace Activist of the Year primarily for her work with the 7th Street Mural Project. Her private studio practice produces art that is in collections across the USA and is currently represented at the M2 gallery. Most recently Tanya has established the Parlor Pink art space for artistic communal gatherings, workshops and more.

When artists break ground, they do it better! 🎨

In October 2024, we broke ground on the Artspace Windgate Campus — and local artist Kristi Crow made the moment unforgettable, transforming the ceremonial shovel into a work of art.

Kristi is a 2024 BFA graduate from the School of Art & Design at UA Little Rock. Kristi currently works as the Administrative Analyst for the School of Art & Design, while also running the artWORKS visiting artist program. She is also one of the co-founders of Misfit Maker Market, a monthly art market created by artists for artists. She still finds time to keep painting and aims to have one exhibition a year, with the next one coming up at Gallery 26 in July

Kristi's hand-painted shovel will be on display in the building for the community to enjoy.

Some artists don’t just break ground—they make it beautiful. 🌸🌼

This October 2024, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the Artspace Windgate Campus, and we did it with a creative twist.

Local artist Tifany Hamlin took the ceremonial groundbreaking shovel and turned it into a work of art. As Tifany shared, "I loved the challenge of painting on a shovel! I’ve added it to the list of things I’ve painted included buildings, footballs, and garden signs.”

The hand-painted shovel will be on display inside the building, where the community can enjoy it.

Meet Tifany:
“I am a self-taught, mixed media artist living in North Little Rock who’s obsessed with flowers and bright colors, especially those found in nature. Flowers are my muse and most of my artwork features abstract bouquets.”

When artists break ground, they do it differently. 🌸🐝

In October of 2024 we broke ground on the Artspace Windgate Campus. Local artist Gregory Moore transformed their ceremonial groundbreaking shovel saying, "I made the shovel rusty to evoke change and transformation. I felt like a bee was a good symbol of working together in a group setting. The flower is about inspiration - the bee is drawn to the flower to get nectar and in the process, they pollinate the flower.”

Gregory’s shovel will be displayed in the building for everyone in the community to enjoy.

About Gregory:
My art making process involves rummaging through salvage yards and dumpsters in search of discarded objects to paint on. I seek out artifacts that are uniquely stained, rusted or otherwise damaged. As I paint, I let the characteristics that attract me to the piece guide my painting, overlaying imagery that integrates and honors the character of the found object.

Little Rock, this one is for you...

Artspace Windgate Campus is open today!

This building exists because this community said it should. Artists, arts organizations, neighbors, educators, and advocates spent years telling us what Little Rock's creative community needed- and then showed up to make it happen.

Now there are 60 affordable homes where artists can live and make their work. Commercial space where arts organizations can put down roots. Studios where visiting artists from near and far can come and create.

We are so proud to be part of this city.

The grand opening celebration is coming soon and we can't wait to gather with all of you. Until then, if you know an artist who needs an affordable place to live and work in Little Rock, please share. Homes are still available!
