Metro Detroit drivers are getting hit from every direction. 🚧 Starting Friday night, westbound I-96 Express will completely close from the M-8/Davison split to M-39/Southfield Freeway until Saturday at 5 p.m. Then, starting Saturday at 5 p.m., the westbound I-96 Local lanes will completely close from the Davison split to Greenfield Road and stay closed until 5 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

The I-96 work adds another headache to construction already affecting major Metro Detroit routes, including I-696, I-94 and other freeways. For drivers, that can mean longer commutes, heavier traffic, detours and more gas burned at a time when filling up is already expensive.

Between freeway construction, closures and high gas prices, getting across Metro Detroit is costing drivers more time and more money.

Detroit is getting the largest urban equestrian center in the country, and it's built for kids.

The nonprofit Detroit Horse Power is turning 14 acres in the Hope Village neighborhood into a $13 million facility with stables for 17 horses, indoor and outdoor arenas, and classrooms.

It uses riding to teach city kids confidence and life skills, all for free, and expects to reach more than 1,000 students a year. It opens by the end of 2026.

Today is Vernors 160th anniversary! 🥤🎉

First served to the public in Detroit in 1866, Vernors Soda was created by Detroit pharmacist James Vernor and has become one of the city’s most enduring brands and soft drinks. Today, it remains the oldest surviving ginger ale in the United States and a flavor generations of Detroiters have grown up with.

To celebrate, Eastern Market is hosting a free Vernors 160th Anniversary Celebration today, June 14, from 1 to 4pm on Riopelle Street. The event includes historical exhibits, Vernors-inspired food and drinks, interactive experiences, a street-wide toast at 3:30pm, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate one of Detroit’s most iconic creations.

Long before it became a household name, Vernors was sold at a soda fountain inside James Vernor’s Woodward Avenue pharmacy. Over the decades, it grew into a Detroit institution, with generations of Detroiters who still reach for a Vernors when they’re feeling under the weather or ordering a Boston Cooler.

While Vernors is now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper and no longer produced in Detroit, its roots still remain firmly planed here in the city where it began.

160 years later, Vernors remains one of Detroit’s most iconic brands and is a must to try when visiting.
