In the first quarter of 2026, statewide rural land prices were up 6% year-over-year to $5,246 per acre, while sales activity increased 5.5%.

One trend we continue to see: buyers are being selective.

September always seems to fill the calendar in a hurry. Hunting season, football, school, 4-H, work around the ranch. There’s always somewhere to be or something that needs doing.

But every once in a while, I think about what will really matter 10 years from now. For me, it’s the time spent with family and the memories we’re making.

September 1 has been a day I've looked forward to since I was a boy, and I still get that same feeling every year.

These days, it's not just about the hunt. It's about looking back on the years spent in the field with my boys, watching the sun go down, spotting a few superheroes in the field, sharing stories and snacks in the blind, and making memories that will last long after the season is over.

Those days remind me that our greatest trophies aren't always measured in antlers or limits, but in the time we spend together and the traditions we pass down to the next generation.

☀️ Summer Herd Management: Stay Vigilant Against New World Screwworm

Summer brings longer days, higher temperatures, and increased stress on livestock. It's also a time when routine herd observation becomes one of the most important management practices you can do.

The re-emergence of the New World Screwworm (NWS) has Texas livestock producers on high alert. Because female screwworm flies lay their eggs in open wounds, routine herd checks and prompt wound treatment are more important than ever. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and the Texas Animal Health Commission recommend increased surveillance throughout the summer months.

Use the checklist as a guide for daily, weekly, and monthly herd management to help keep your livestock healthy and reduce the risk of screwworm infestation.

⚠️ If You Suspect Screwworm
Watch for:
• Open wounds that fail to heal
• Foul odor from affected tissue
• Visible larvae (maggots) within a wound
• Excessive irritation around a wound site

If you observe these symptoms, isolate the animal immediately and contact the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) or your local veterinarian. Early detection and rapid reporting are critical to limiting the spread.
