You may soon notice that some MRED listings are no longer appearing on Zillow or Trulia due to an ongoing dispute between Zillow and Midwest Real Estate Data (MRED), the MLS system that powers the majority of listings across Northern Illinois. (Axios)

For over 100 years, Chicagoans walked past this Gilded Age mansion thinking it was made of spooky, pitch-black stone.

They were wrong.

This is one of the most incredible "glow-ups" in Chicago architectural history.

Sitting at the corner of Erie and Wabash in River North, this is the historic Nickerson House (now known as the Richard H. Driehaus Museum). Built in 1883 for a wealthy banking tycoon, it is one of the very few surviving grand mansions from an era when this neighborhood was filled with the homes of Chicago's elite.

So, why was it black in the top photo?

That wasn't paint, and it wasn't dark stone. That was literally over a century of baked-on coal ash, train smoke, and thick industrial smog from Chicago's gritty manufacturing era. The building sat there absorbing the city's pollution for so long that multiple generations of locals grew up fully believing it was just a dark, gothic-looking building.

In the early 2000s, the late philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus bought the mansion to restore it. When restoration crews used specialized lasers and micro-abrasives to finally clean the exterior, the neighborhood was absolutely stunned.

They washed away 100 years of Chicago soot to reveal the beautiful, light golden-colored sandstone hiding underneath the whole time!

(Fun fact: While the outside is sandstone, the inside is practically fireproof. Nickerson built it just a decade after the Great Chicago Fire and was so terrified of his house burning down that he covered the interior with 17 different types of stone. It was famously nicknamed the "Marble Palace.")

Today, it operates as a stunning museum dedicated to the Gilded Age, acting as a perfect time capsule completely surrounded by modern downtown skyscrapers.
