This picture shows horses plowing Old Main Hill for Victory Gardens in 1918! Victory gardens were first promoted during WWI, encouraging Americans to produce their own food by planting vegetable gardens in their backyards, churchyards, city parks, and playgrounds.

Have you noticed all the grasshoppers this year? 154 years ago in the fall, early settlers in Cache Valley had a similar problem. More than half their crops were devoured by grasshopper-like insects, or "Mormon crickets". Unlike today, the community completely relied on the food they grew, and it was a very difficult year for everyone.

Cache Valley History Series: The Founding of Logan City -

On 6 June 1859, a small group of settlers were sent to Cache Valley by Brigham Young. After surveying a fort site near the banks of the Logan River, they began harvesting logs for houses. They constructed two rows of cabins facing each other, patterning the settlement after Salt Lake City, including streets wide enough for several vehicles to pass each other. By March 1860 there were 100 houses in the settlement, which was named Logan after an early trapper, Ephraim Logan.

Four patrol men stood guard at night to protect the settlers from any unfriendly Native Americans. The log cabins had dirt roofs and floors and there are some early accounts that recall taking umbrellas to bed to keep the rain off.
