A photo of the Pére David's month-old fawn. A few days ago, we experienced a rare opportunity to watch its older sibling (about 18 months old) chasing it around one of the water tanks. They played for several minutes. Adorable, but I didn't have my camera 😞.

Spring rainbow over the ranch. Driving on the ranch not long after sunup yesterday, I stopped to open a gate, glanced at the sky, and saw this full rainbow. The scene reminds me of an English countryside I either saw in one of the many 19th-century novels I devoured as a literature major. . . or perhaps imagined. At any rate, I think I can accurately describe if as bucolic. The Texas Hill Country is a magical place!

Spring! And here come the babies. Two Père David's fawns this week. Delighted to play a small part in repopulating this “extinct-in-the-wild” species. Watch for photos when I get some.

Daylight Savings caught me off guard--I thought it was still a month away. (Even retired with a flexible schedule, I'm not fond of springing forward.)

If I'd looked around, I would have known. Spring is starting to show up around the ranch.

The meadows are already turning green, and tiny wildflower shoots are beginning to poke through the soil. The air has that fresh smell I love.

Our red-tailed hawks live here year-round, but in spring we start seeing them everywhere — circling high above the river meadow, riding the thermals over the Hill Country, and swooping low over the ranch in search of a meal. I always take it as one of the first signs the seasons are changing.

Spring Break is right around the corner, and the ranch is waking up in all the best ways — greener fields, active wildlife, cool mornings, and those balmy afternoons down by the Colorado River.

It’s a pretty wonderful time to be here. I hope it's equally wonderful wherever you are.

Spring on the ranch--my favorite season!

One of our fallow does had twins this spring! And one of those twins will almost certainly be a rare white fallow when it's grown, based on its white face, throat, and legs. The spots on its back will disappear. Of the 2 dozen or so fallows on the ranch, we have one other white one.

What a catch! These guys had the boat and the know-how to pull some impressive fish (this 40-LB. FLATHEAD) from the ranch's stretch of the Colorado River. Fun for them and a vicarious high for us.

Newest lamb on the ranch!
This precious lamb is three days old and still a little wobbly on her feet. Just before the ewe gave birth, I was concerned that she might have early mastitis. But we saw her shortly afer the lamb was born, both standing in the pasture and appearing to be okay. Then late yesterday the ewe seemed lethargic and we weren't sure the lamb had had any nourishment--I was sick at heart, thicking we would wake to find them both gone. So I said a prayer to the Good Shepherd, and this morning the mama was up grazing and the baby was nursing.

The longer I'm around sheep, the more I appreciate God's using them analagously so often. They are simple-minded with a true herd mentality. They have almost no natural defenses. They are prone to ailments and disease. They're adorable as lambs but grow up to be, at best, unremarkable. Yet, the Good Shepherd will leave the flock to rescue just one of these ought-to-be-a-dime-a-dozen creatures. The lamb . . . the sparrow . . . me. All totally insignificant EXCEPT our Creator says we matter infinitely more than we can comprehend.
