Happy 70th birthday pops. I have to admit that dad and I disagree on absolutely everything, and yet we still love each other🙏🏻🫶🏻 wrote the below when he turned 60.

Happy birthday pops.. The big 60. Such a blessing to celebrate him today.

His story. Dad was born in a small town in Mexico called Valparaiso Zacatecas. He's one of 13 kids😜 My grandparents did not own a Tv lol. He started working at the age of 7. Poverty stricken at a young age he felt the obligation to help the family. At the age of 17 years old he heard people talk about the good ole USA and decided to come and see what opportunities were in store for him. Before leaving he promised my mom he would return to marry her. Many men made this same promise and most didn't keep it. Not my dad. They married In 1976 and both left their family behind for the hope of a better future. My parents crossed the U.S. BORDER in the trunk of a car. Who does that? Two youngsters with the heart of warriors. They had the burning desire to do and be better.

The U.S. Has given them the opportunity to realize the American Dream and raise a family of 5. When I hear people talk about building a wall to keep those illegals out I chuckle because when a person has the burning desire my father has nothing will stop them even if you tried.

Dad has never called in sick a day in his life. He's always gone above and beyond and continues to do so till this day. He's instilled in us work ethics, culture, family values, spirituality, integrity, respect, perseverance, hope, love, compassion.... I could go on and on.. When I hear and read people talking about illegals or Mexicans in a derogatory way I honestly don't take it personal. All I think is 'you don't know my father'. Yes, he came illegally. However, he's worked his tail off and has contributed to this country just as much if not more as the next person. He's earned his right to be in this country with blood, sweat and tears.

Dad loves opera, music in general, is a jokester and is a bit grumpy and loud. Now I know where I get it from❤️

One year ago, this family almost talked themselves out of homeownership. 🏡

They were more than qualified, but fear and “what ifs” started creeping in once we found the house they loved and entered escrow. The husband was ready to back out completely. What if I lose my job? What if something happens? What if, what if, what if…

But with the support of his wife, amazing in-laws, and a lot of reassurance, they took the leap anyway. 🙏

Remembering Dorothy “Ann” Fleshman 🤍

I had the privilege of working with Ann years ago during my time with Duarte Unified. Today, alongside a group of retirees who have collectively given hundreds of hours of their lives in service to students and our community, we shared stories and remembered the impact she made.

Ann was the first person to greet you when you walked through the school district doors—always kind, always welcoming, always making you feel seen. That warmth stayed with you.

Her legacy lives on in every life she touched, every smile she offered, and every moment of care she gave so freely.

Rest in peace, Ann. You will always be remembered. 🤍

Career Day at Duarte High School tomorrow.

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who is joining me this year to give back to our community and to the amazing students at Duarte High School. We’re all busy, but it truly means a lot that we’re making the time to show up and pour into the next generation.

For me, this is especially meaningful because it’s my alma mater. Coming back in this way is full circle, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.

Last night was a sold-out night with Los Bukis— truly the The Beatles of our música romántica grupera era.

Their songs were the soundtrack of my childhood playing in the background of family parties, long car rides, and moments where my mom/dad, tias, and uncles sang every lyric like it was part of their story. Seeing them live felt like watching generations connect through music.

Moments like this also remind me of something bigger: immigrant communities don’t just survive they build, create, and contribute. We fill stadiums, drive economies, and bring culture and life into spaces that hold 50,000+ people singing in unison.

So keep your head up. Ignore the noise. Celebrate your roots loudly. And continue advocating, speaking up, and standing firm for our rights and the dignity of our communities.
