I heard my first Jimmy Buffett song way back in high school. His music became the soundtrack to my wayward and foolish college days. Those songs made me want to learn how to play guitar and sing. His tunes were funny and smart; sweet and nostalgic. So I taught myself the few chords required and learned how to do it. I played those songs at some open mic nights and, amazingly, got a few gigs. Then a few more. I bought some Hawaiian shirts. I got a partner to play with me. We got pretty busy, pretty fast.
One night in a friendly neighborhood Chicago tavern, a pretty little redhead walked in and applauded for one of those tunes. We got engaged the following spring in Key West. Soon after, there was a band, a Corona beer connection, festivals, parties at the annual Buffett concerts, many, many more gigs and a week playing at Margaritaville in Key West. On my 40th birthday!
I have been a professional singer-songwriter and musician most of my life. The experiences I have had and the friendships I have made along the way are priceless to me. The redhead and I celebrated our 30th anniversary last month. Itβs been a helluva ride.
Thank you, Jimmy.
