Due to continued icy road conditions caused by the winter storm, the City of Longview Sanitation Department has shifted this week’s collection schedule to ensure the safety of our crews and residents.

🗓️ Revised Collection Schedule (Jan 26 – Jan 30)
To navigate the ice safely, all trash and recycling services will be collected two days after your regularly scheduled day.

Please Note: For this week only, both trash and recycling will be collected together and taken to the landfill.

Monday pickups ➡️ Moving to Wednesday
Tuesday pickups ➡️ Moving to Thursday
Wednesday pickups ➡️ Moving to Friday
Thursday pickups ➡️ Moving to Saturday

🔄 Schedule Resuming Next Week
Normal sanitation and recycling schedules (including standard recycling processing) will resume as usual starting next week.

Big department-store chains from JCPenney to Macy’s are unloading their properties as fast as they can. Dillard’s is buying real estate.

The department-store chain this month purchased the Longview Mall in Texas, about two hours east of Dallas. Dillard’s and a partner paid $34 million for the 47-year old mall in the city of Longview, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The mall was available at the right price and is a longtime favorite of Chief Executive Bill Dillard. The company also wanted to make sure it didn’t fall into the wrong hands.

“There are some bad actors out there in the mall industry that have been buying malls,” said Chris Johnson, co-chief financial officer at Dillard’s, who declined to name which ones. “They are not paying their utility bills, not paying property taxes. Every mall they own deteriorates.”

Retailers have complained about investor-owned malls falling into disrepair, but most have the option of moving to a new shopping center when their leases expire. Department stores, by contrast, typically own the anchor space they occupy, and their fortunes are therefore more deeply entwined with derelict mall ownership.

The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day:

Longview, Texas was built on the outskirts of Earpville, a pioneer Upshur County community along the old Marshall-Tyler Road (today known as U.S. 80). Founded around 1850 by James Earp, Earpville consisted of several farmhouses, a post office, blacksmith shop, a church, one or two stores, stagecoach stop and campground. After the Civil War, the Southern Pacific railroad began expanding toward California from its pre-war terminus at Marshall, Texas. The Southern Pacific bought a 100-acre tract in April 1870 from farmer 0. H. Methvin, laying out a town site in advance of track construction. The name “Longview,” implying farsighted plans, was selected for the new town and was inspired by the scenic view from atop Rock Hill, where Methvin’s home was located. I kind of wish they'd kept the name "Earpville," though, as "Earpville" just sounds to me like a town that should be somewhere in Texas.

Union Pacific will be making repairs to several railroad crossings on Sunday, May 18, from 12 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday.

Affected crossings:

🚦 Ward Dr
🚦 Enterprise St

This isn’t a City project, but it will impact local traffic. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes if needed. Thanks for your patience while Union Pacific works to improve these crossings!
