Sharp, self-aware, and genuinely funny. A great refreshing read.
I picked this up expecting a light, forgettable comedy read and came away pleasantly surprised by how well-observed a lot of the humor actually is. What works best here is the author’s willingness to make herself the butt of the joke just as often as everyone around her. She’s not above admitting when her own choices made a bad situation considerably worse. That kind of honesty is what separates this from a lot of “wacky things happened to me” memoirs, which can feel one-note after a few chapters. The pacing throughout is excellent, each short story builds naturally into the next without over-explaining the joke. If I’m being picky, a couple of the later chapters lean on similar beats (a chaotic setup, a self-aware aside, a punchline), so reading it in one long sitting rather than a chapter at a time might dull the effect slightly. That’s a minor quibble though. As a whole, this is a smart, breezy read that trusts the reader to laugh at chaos right alongside the author instead of just at her.

Reader Review

Even the chapter titles made me smile

Before you even get into the actual stories, chapter titles like “Nobody Likes a Pushy Salesperson” and “We’re All Just Human, Even Assholes” already had me smiling, they tell you exactly what kind of book you’re in for. That sense of humor is baked into the structure itself, not just the individual stories, which I thought was a nice touch. Little details like that add up over the course of the whole book.

Overall take: this is what a modern humor memoir should look like

I read a lot in this genre and a common problem is books like this either lean too hard into shock value with nothing underneath it, or they get too sentimental and lose the comedic momentum. This one threads that needle really well across the board. Structurally its smart too each chapter is framed around a “life lesson” which gives even the wildest anecdotes a sense of purpose instead of feeling like random stories bolted together. The author’s voice stays consistent from the very first page to the very last, dry, a little foul-mouthed, self-deprecating but never self-pitying. If you liked stuff like “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened” or similar wild true story memoirs, this belongs on the same shelf. Genuinely one of my favorite reads this year.
