Did you know the City of Los Angeles has its own Advisory Commission? Yes! In addition to the CA State Reparations effort, Black Angelenos also have a local platform to engage the this most important assessment of the history and legacy of slavery and institutional racism in our city.

The LA City Reparations Advisory Commission was tasked by with developing the city’s first pilot reparations program for Black residents of LA City.

The Commission will host its first virtual meeting on October 20th with “Homecoming,” a conversation about LA’s past, present and the reparations work needed for a brighter future. Join us on Zoom and FB Live at bit.ly/ReparationsLA

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Today on Juneteenth, we announce a powerful initiative to stabilize Black communities and build a brighter sustainable future through collective ownership, community-friendly capital, and collaboration. We have been intentionally working on this for 2 ½ years. It draws on Black Los Angeles’ proud history and advances our pursuit of self-determination and community liberation.

The name in itself, Liberty, tells an incredible journey. Liberty is an homage to Liberty Savings and Loan Association, the first Black-owned bank in California, founded in 1924 by a group of iconic Black businessmen and civic leaders who also established other major institutions that defined Black Los Angeles. Liberty was created to provide opportunities for Black families seeking to buy a home and establish a business, but were being denied loans by white banks.

Nearly a century later, the heavy chains of systemic racism and inequality continue and threaten to completely eliminate Black neighborhoods.

We are in a praxis moment that requires us to come together to preserve our great legacy, circle our north star and journey toward a brighter future together.

Through multiple entities, non-extractive financing, community organizing, and with the power of the people we will develop healthy, stable, and environmentally sustainable neighborhoods for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color. We have a vision for a co-operative and restorative economy that puts people and the planet over profits, and creates opportunities for all. And we’re going to build it together.

The time is now. Free the Land. This is Liberty.

The machine is hard at work, like always. Just weeks after the community SHUT DOWN the sale of the , the sellers are at it again. Stepping over the hundreds of neighborhood members who have consistently come together to claim and reframe this space, and are moving to auction off our next week. "The entity will be structured to be accountable to community members, and will have the financial, legal, and technical expertise to design and implement development projects. Goals, such as training and hiring local and disadvantaged workers, reducing air pollution, increasing access to healthy foods, and meeting other community needs, can be the starting point for the design of community development projects.

"This type of development will require a shift in the way residents and city leaders approach development projects. Residents will be sharing the 'driver’s seat,' so they will need to shift from being oppositional to being propositional, and will need to develop all of the financial and technical skills to engage in decisions about development projects."

The faculty, staff, researchers, and affiliates of the Othering & Belonging Institute work together with multidisciplinary approaches to learn, research, and construct solutions for society's most pressing issues. Our programs and initiatives are all designed to effect transformative change.

"Burlington Associates first added a 'CLT Resource Center' to its website in 2005, making freely available a majority of the training materials, technical documents, and research reports that our partners had produced over many years while assisting both new and mature CLTs. Our purpose in collecting, updating, and sharing these materials has been to raise the standard of practice throughout the worldwide CLT movement. We subscribe to principles of the Creative Commons, allowing for the reproduction and use of our materials, while requesting that the source and authorship of these materials be acknowledged and that the format and content of these materials remain unaltered unless authorized by Burlington Associates."
