Today on Memorial Day I want to honor and thank my good friend’s father, who is still with us today, ROBERT H WOLFF!!
Words can not express my gratitude that you’re still here to share your stories and for your service for this country 🇺🇸💙❤️
Robert H. “Bob” Wolff was a combat aviator and POW in World War II. POW stands for Prisoner of War.
Highest Rank: Second Lieutenant
Role/Job: Pilot
Awards: Air Medal European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal Prisoner of War Medal World War II Victory Medal
Here is a brief summary about what this brave man and his crew had to endure. It’s really incredible he survived.
In April of 1942 he was called to active duty and began his training as an aviation cadet, flying the PT-17, BT-13, and the AT-17. He was only 18 years old!
On January 4 1943, upon completion of his training, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and assigned to the B-17 Flying Fortress.
Following three months of training in the B-17, Bob and his crew, “The Wolff Pack,” were sent to join the recently-formed 100th Bomb Group, 418th Squadron in Norfolk, England.
Robert’s story involved his B-17 to be attacked by the enemy damaging 3 of the 4 engines which lead him to ditching in the water. Captured by a German patrol boat, Wolff became a prisoner of war and was sent to Stalag Luft III POW camp.
On 28 January 1945, the Germans were forced to move the prisoners as the Russians approached.
They remained and endured harsh conditions for three more months until an allied tank knocked down the gate and freed them on 29 April 1945!! This info was taken by the goefoundation.org 💙🇺🇸❤️
