Hand-built in 1947, the residence celebrates the romance of California living, drawing from the intimate proportions and quiet simplicity of the early Mission era while creating a remarkably comfortable home for modern life.
That sense of retreat was particularly fitting for one of the home’s most notable residents, actor Anthony Perkins, who lived at the Seattle Hacienda during the later years of his life. Best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), Perkins had a career that extended far beyond the role that made him a cinematic icon. After his Oscar-nominated breakout success in Friendly Persuasion, he starred in films including Fear Strikes Out (1957), The Matchmaker (1958), and Goodbye Again (1961), before taking on the role that would define his legacy. More than three decades after Psycho, Perkins returned to the character of Norman Bates in three sequels, while also directing and continuing to work in film and television.
Away from the spotlight, his Nichols Canyon home provided a private sanctuary, a place surrounded by trees and removed from the constant motion of Hollywood. Anthony Perkins lived his final years quietly here at home with his wife, Berry Berenson, and their sons, Elvis and Osgood.
