Labor Day originated in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, when labor activists and unions fought for better wages, safer conditions, and shorter hours to counter grueling 12-hour workdays. Labor Day was officially established and signed into law by President Grover Cleveland in 1894 to recognize the contributions of American workers.
