Fun factoid: the Herald Examiner Building (right) was commissioned in 1913 by William Randolph Hearst to house his sixth newspaper, the Los Angeles Examiner. This was the first collaboration between Hearst and architect Julia Morgan, California’s first licensed female architect. She would go on to design the Hearst Castle in San Simeon 🏰

The Herald Examiner Building recently underwent a full restoration after sitting vacant for many years, and now houses ASU’s DTLA campus - including the School of Journalism! Talk about a full-circle adaptive reuse 💫

POV: you find yourself in modernist roofline heaven 🤩

Did you know that there’s an enclave of beautifully preserved mid century homes by the modernist master Richard Neutra, tucked away right in Silverlake??

Along with the architect’s personal residence and studio, the “Silver Lake Colony” includes several stunning post-war modern homes that were all designed and built by Neutra, with views over the reservoir and surrounding hills. The walls of glass are meant to provide a connection to nature inside the home.

Fascinating fact: during the years following WWII, Japanese Americans were released from internment camps and were not allowed to own property in the US. As an immigrant himself, Neutra disagreed with this policy and decided to find a way around it. Using some creativity and placing the homes in the names of the children, who were US citizens, he ultimately sold the newly built Silver Lake homes to Asian-American families. Some of the historic properties in the enclave are still owned and preserved by the original families to this day!
