You don’t have to be Beyoncé to SLAY. We had just sat down and spotted her through the picture window. She was not a small person and wore a black floral chiffon Kimono-style cover-up, over a vermilion dress with an empire waist and a ruffled bodice. Black faux fur trimmed her hood-like hat and framed her thick, copper colored curls. The entire effect was arresting. When she entered our restaurant and sat within my sightline, I had to draw her, lack of portrait experience be damned. There are all sorts of “mistakes,” but I captured her royal essence, and she seemed tickled that I drew her.

Am I still a Realtor?! YES!! It is not a job, it’s an identity. I traveled across the country to Wi******er Virginia to attend a very small and select conference called Genuine Hustle. Attendees understand that while the JOB is buying and selling a home, the purpose and the mission is guiding people through a huge life transition. Most homebuyers and sellers prefer working with a trusted guide over a transactionally minded sales person. Unfortunately, we all look alike on “paper.” But, if the bullet list is always the same, how do you choose? When talking with possible Realtors ask about their process, (can they say more than, yes I have one?), if they talk or listen, and if they demonstrate an understanding of your unique situation. The best part of being a Realtor is helping people get to the “other side”. Most home buyers and sellers are dealing with a Big Life Change (birth, death, weddings, divorce, growing, aging) and the honor and privilege of my life’s work is to ease that transition and solve problems before they ever happen.

I retired from the hustle of creating new clients, but I hope I never retire from helping people at these pivotal moments.

Today’s meeting was all about strategic planning- in this case, life after divorce. He met me years ago at a DIGGS event, and I am honored beyond belief that he tracked me down in his time of need. He needed focus (beyond the emotions), a snapshot of his future options, and referrals to professionals: financial and estate planners, senior care managers (for his elderly mother), and mediators.

Ironically, he might not need a Realtor, but that’s ok! I am so glad I now have the freedom to do this part of the job without worrying about getting paid.

My new client got a tiny slice of peace of mind, and I had time to do this cool sketch. Win for All!

Realtor Homies...are you feeling a little angst over the coming changes? I received an email newsletter from one of you that was brilliant. I wrote back to tell her exactly what I loved, and I thought you guys might like to see my thoughts. Maybe it will help your marketing connect with the people who matter.

"I wanted to compliment you on your email newsletter. In a sea, no tidal wave, of Realtor same same same, your stories stand out. They are about CLIENTS and how you helped them, instead of transactional selling.

Our value is client service- specifically our ability to help clients transform from one life (in one home) to another. Selling for so many $$ over a list price, a fancy home, or even selling in x number of days has become meaningless as a marketing message.

The recent industry changes require an ability to communicate our unique value- a value unduplicatable by large internet-based companies and agents. Your stories are about real people and highlight the value of your relationships."

Homies, we are all guilty of meaningless marketing. We make the same promises and stake out the same claims. When we are all the same the only point of difference is our fee.

Instead, create marketing messages that develop relationships and trust. Educate, demonstrate empathy for their situations, inspire dreams, and provide resources to solve problems.

BTW, this photo was from a date with the hubby. We got to visit the iconic Stahl House at twilight. One of my brilliant Realtor Homies creates relationships with mid-century architecture buffs. He constantly demonstrates his empathy and understanding to this specific niche.

Discovered a lovely black sand beach in Hilo. Mostly locals, even on Easter Sunday. The teeny tiny fisher person is standing on a lava rock cliff that eventually turned into a jumping off place for a small crowd of yoots. I suppose it wasn’t very high, all things considered, but my internal grumpy old lady was muttering something about those damn fools… the sun was out, the breeze post and gentle, and soul was singing with deep and soulful gratitude.

Key Day is the BEST day in a Realtor's life!!

I love this story because it turns the tragedy of divorce into a story of new beginnings.🏡

When a couple divorces, selling the house is often the last step in a long, painful process. Everyone is tired and emotionally drained.

My goal is to make the sale as smooth and convenient, ending on as positive a note as humanly possible. I will never promise, but so far my record is perfect. 👀

At the final walk-through on this home, the old owner got to meet the new owner's dog. Everyone felt like things had worked out with the best possible chance of a happily ever after. 👸
