From Enslaved to Entrepreneur: Bridget “Biddy” Mason

Bridget Biddy Mason (1818-1891) is an American Hero. Born enslaved, Mason became one of the first prominent citizens and landowners in Los Angeles in the 1850s and 1860s. She also founded the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles in 1872.

Mason was born in Mississippi in 1818 and given the name Bridget, later nicknamed Biddy. She was enslaved by Robert Marion Smith of Mississippi and a Mormon convert.

Over the years Smith moved his family and slaves to the Holladay-Cottonwood area of the Salt Lake Valley. Then to San Bernardino, California where Mason met a free black couple who urged her to legally contest her slave status once she reached California.

Smith decided to move to Texas for fear that he might lose his slaves, Texas was a slave state. Owens told the L.A. County Sheriff that slaves were being illegally held. The sheriff gathered a posse and apprehended Smith’s wagon train in Cajon Pass, California.

After five years enslaved in California, Mason challenged Smith for her freedom. On January 21, 1856, Judge Benjamin Hayes approved Mason’s petition to free Mason and thirteen members of her family. She took the surname Mason from the mayor of San Bernardino. Mason moved to L.A. She continued working as a midwife and nurse, saving her money and using it to purchase land in what is now the heart of downtown L.A. where she organized First A.M.E. Church. Mason used her $3 million wealth, to become a philanthropist. She donated to charities, fed and sheltered the poor, and visited prisoners.

Bridget “Biddy” Mason died in L.A. on January 15, 1891 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
