CASE STUDY: “But I’ve never had a leak in my house… so how could I have mold?”
This is something we hear all the time.
Our client came to us after receiving elevated mycotoxin lab results. She was confused because, as far as she knew, her home had never experienced a major leak, flood, or obvious water damage.
But water intrusion doesn’t always look like a flooded room or a dripping ceiling.
During the inspection, our Mold Dog alerted around several windows — pointing us toward areas that warranted further investigation and environmental testing.
And the testing confirmed mold.
Here’s why windows can be such an overlooked source:
Over time, exterior building materials and waterproofing components can deteriorate. Stucco can crack, sealants can fail, and the flashing and water-resistant systems around windows can become compromised. In many homes, these components have been exposed to years — sometimes decades — of sun, rain, temperature changes, and normal building movement.
Moisture can then make its way behind the stucco and around the window assembly without ever creating the kind of obvious “leak” a homeowner would notice.
That means the wall can look completely normal from inside the house while moisture and mold are hidden within the building materials.
This is exactly why our Mold Dogs are such a valuable investigative tool. They help us narrow down potential hidden problem areas so environmental testing can be targeted instead of simply guessing where to look.
If you have elevated mycotoxin results, unexplained symptoms, or suspect something in your home but keep thinking, “We’ve never had a leak,” this case is the perfect reminder:
Hidden moisture doesn’t always announce itself.
A Mold Dog inspection can help you investigate what may be happening behind the surfaces of your home and identify areas that deserve a closer look.
