🏛️ HOUSE CRUSH FRIDAY 🏛️

This week’s House Crush is La Fábrica, Ricardo Bofill’s breathtaking transformation of an abandoned cement factory just outside Barcelona, Spain, into one of the world’s greatest examples of adaptive architecture.

I’ve been fascinated by La Fábrica for years. What captivates me most isn’t simply the architecture.

It’s the vision.

Where most would have seen an abandoned industrial relic, Ricardo Bofill saw limitless possibility.

Monumental concrete silos became sculptural spaces where architecture and nature exist in harmony. Cypress trees rise from the concrete, vines soften the massive forms, and rooftop gardens weave through what was once a working cement factory.

La Fábrica has an unmistakable cinematic quality. It feels simultaneously ancient, futuristic, and dreamlike. As a longtime fan of Blade Runner, one of my all-time favorite films, it has always reminded me of that same epic, immersive atmosphere while remaining completely timeless and entirely its own.

Ricardo Bofill described his vision as “something halfway between a ruin and a cloister.” Looking at La Fábrica today, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting description.

It transcends the very notion of a masterpiece.

It exists in a category of its own.

This week’s architectural obsession is the Samuel-Novarro House, one of Los Feliz’s most iconic residences.

Designed in 1928 by Lloyd Wright—the son of Frank Lloyd Wright. This remarkable Art Deco masterpiece is wrapped in hand-patinated copper that has weathered into its signature emerald-green exterior over nearly a century.

Originally commissioned for Louis Samuel, secretary to silent film legend Ramón Novarro, the home later became Novarro’s own residence. Decades later, Diane Keaton helped restore and preserve this architectural treasure, ensuring its legacy would continue.

Now designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #130, the Samuel-Novarro House remains one of Southern California’s most extraordinary architectural landmarks, a stunning blend of Hollywood history, Art Deco design, and timeless craftsmanship.
