Long before Apple, Google and the tech campuses, grapes were growing in the foothills above Saratoga, Los Gatos and Cupertino.
And some of the w**eries tucked into these mountains have stories you might not expect.
Here are five worth discovering:
🍇 Ridge Vineyards | Cupertino
A w**e from Cupertino made history in Paris! Its 1971 Monte Bello competed in the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris and took first place in the 30th anniversary rematch in 2006.
🦚 Picchetti Winery | Cupertino
Founded by Italian immigrant brothers who began homesteading this ridge in the 1880s. Today, its historic stone w**ery, picnic grounds, nearby trails and free-roaming peacocks make it feel like a little escape into old California.
🐎 Cooper-Garrod Vineyards at Garrod Farms | Saratoga
NASA, horses and w**e? The Garrod family has farmed here since 1893, and George Cooper was a NASA test pilot who later became a w**emaker. The w**ery’s Test Pilot w**es are named after aircraft in his honor. And yes, there are horses, too!
🎶 The Mountain Winery | Saratoga
Before the concerts, there was w**e. Founded in 1906 by French w**emaker Paul Masson, this historic mountaintop w**ery ceased large-scale w**e production in the 1950s. Its concert tradition began in 1958, and vineyards were later replanted to honor its roots.
Today, it’s best known for concerts under the stars, w**e tastings and spectacular views overlooking Silicon Valley.
⛪ Testarossa | Los Gatos
A w**ery that survived Prohibition! Established by Jesuit priests in 1888, the historic Novitiate Winery continued producing altar w**e during Prohibition. Testarossa moved into the property in 1997, bringing new life to this remarkable piece of Los Gatos history.
One of my favorite things about living here is discovering the stories beyond the tech campuses and headlines.
You don’t have to drive all the way to Napa or Sonoma to feel like you’ve escaped somewhere completely different.
Sometimes, w**e country is right in our own backyard. 🍷
Which of these five have you visited? Any favorites?
