Taylor Swift purchased the Samuel Goldwyn Estate in Beverly Hills in 2015 for $25 million, acquiring a property built in 1934 for one of the most powerful producers in the history of Hollywood. The 11,000-square-foot Georgian Revival mansion came with an immediate responsibility that Swift appears to have taken seriously.
Rather than updating the property to contemporary tastes, Swift undertook a careful restoration process focused on preserving the original details that made the estate historically significant. That included restoring original lattice panels and the wisteria foliage that had been part of the property's character since the 1930s.
In 2017, those preservation efforts paid off in a formal way — Swift successfully campaigned to have the property designated as a National Historic Landmark, a status that protects the estate's architectural and historical integrity in a way that private ownership alone cannot guarantee. Very few private residences hold this designation.
Samuel Goldwyn was one of the founding figures of MGM and one of the most influential producers of Hollywood's Golden Age. The home he built in Beverly Hills was a product of that era's ambition and confidence, and Swift's decision to fight for its preservation was a choice to keep that history intact rather than profit from the land beneath it.
A pop star protecting a film producer's 1930s estate is not an obvious story. And yet here it is.
