Did you know that there’s a lost island at the bottom of the Ohio River that was technically Louisville’s first neighborhood? 🏝️😳

Most people have never even heard of it - but 250 years ago, this 50 acre island was home to the first settlers in the region - long before Louisville even existed. It was called Corn Island, and today it sits at the bottom of the Ohio River - having been completely swallowed by the rising river over 100 years ago 🌊

What’s a 200 year old cemetery doing in a strip mall parking lot in St. Matthews?! 🪦🤯

Well to find out we have to time travel back to look into who owned all of this land - BEFORE - it became the neighborhood we know it as today 🌀⏱️

This peaceful 500-acre park on the outskirts of Louisville hides the dark past of a 152-year-old psychiatric hospital 😳🌳

Before the fields and playgrounds, the land where Tom Sawyer Park now sits was the same site as Central State Hospital (or “Lakeland Asylum”) - which opened up back way back in 1873. And at the time being located outside of the Louisville city limits, it ran like its own small city - 15 separate buildings, a working farm, its own water treatment facility, and even a cemetery for patients with nowhere else to go when they died. Treatments we now recognize as harmful like insulin shock, electroconvulsive therapy, and lobotomies were at the time considered cutting-edge - and it's believed that over 5,000 deaths occurred there over the years of its operation there - with only 900 graves actually documented ..

And look closely next time you go! Many of the park's trails today are the same paths and walkways that once connected the different wards of the asylum 100+ years ago .. Kinda wild to think about as you’re out for a run! 🚶🏻‍♂️

The Sellers of this home blended its 1938-built bones with a modern twist out back 🔍🏡

‼️➡️ pay attention to the photos of the outside where you can see the blue-sided silhouette of the original footprint out front, blended with the wood paneling of the modern addition out back .. It highlights exactly where the old and new elements of the home start and stop like a diamond in the rough.
