STR news in Montgomery VT

Last night the Select Board approved the new Short Term Rental Ordinance. It allows STRs to continue.

✅ Does not cap the number of rentals.

✅ Does not require owner occupancy.

✅ Does not impose waiting periods after purchase.

✅ Does not limit how many rentals one person can own.

New costs for the property owner.

• Registration fee entire-home STR: $250 per year

• Registration fee Partial-home/room rental: $100 per year

• Annual renewal required. No prorating for part-year registrations.

• STR-specific insurance policy or rider.

• Vermont Division of Fire Safety inspection (required for occupancy over 8 guests).

• Potential zoning and conditional-use permit application costs if not already approved.

CIVIL PENALTIES AND FINES

The ordinance is enforced as a civil ordinance, not a criminal one. The Town may impose:

• Up to $800 per violation

• Each day can be treated as a separate violation if the violation continues.

• Day 1: $800

• Day 2: $800

• Day 3: $800

• Day 4: $800
