As we approach the Memorial Day weekend - Here’s an interesting photo postcard written on in 1914. This mill is in Michigan, an area of Stowe beyond the Lake Mansfield Trout Club. The building is decorated with flags and there’s a banner that says MICHIGAN. The lumbermen (note the pile of sawdust to the left) are not identified but the date on the card is for May 30th. We can imagine that they’ve decorated for Memorial Day, perhaps in remembrance of their fathers or grandfathers.
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, and was declared in 1868 to be a remembrance day for those who died in service. Our own Akeley Soldiers Memorial Building on Main Street was built to honor Stowe’s Civil War veterans but if you visit the Memorial Room, you’ll see plaques with names of Stowe’s veterans from wars since as well as our Civil War veterans.
Take a moment of pause to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. History doesn't go away.
