📍How to Spot a Romance Scam.
Be Cautious if Someone You Meet Online:
Online dating and social media can be great ways to connect, but they are also common places for romance scams. A romance scam occurs when a criminal creates a fake online identity to form an emotional relationship, gain trust, and create the illusion of romance or companionship. Once trust is established, the scammer uses that relationship to pressure the victim into sending money or sharing financial information.
📍Claims to live or work far away and avoids meeting in person
Pushes the relationship forward very quickly
Asks for money, gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or access to your bank account
Has frequent “emergencies” or urgent financial needs
How to Protect Yourself
Go slowly and ask questions
Be careful what personal information you share online
Search their photo or story online to see if it’s been used elsewhere
Talk to a trusted friend or family member if something feels off
What to Do If You’re Targeted
Stop communicating immediately. If you have sent money or shared account information, contact your bank right away. A simple rule to remember: Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person. To learn more about romance scams, check out this article by the Federal Trade Commission.
