Anyone who has seen a national cemetery is staggered by the sheer numbers. Rows upon rows of identical, symmetrical markers. Viewing it as a whole can feel overwhelming, impossible to fully take in. They’re only identical at a distance, however. Up close, each one bears the name of an individual who made a choice to serve. A choice they knew came with the possible consequence of their name on one of these stones. There’s no end of different reasons why people make this choice, but what they all share in common is a willingness to serve for the greater good. That is the example they set for us, to love one another enough to give whatever it takes for the betterment of the whole. To protect each other, no matter the cost. May we all aspire to earn this sacrifice, and leave this kind of legacy.
