President Donald J. Trump Approves Major Disaster Declaration for Washington, Including Whatcom County

Federal disaster assistance is now available across Washington state following a series of destructive winter storms that impacted the region late last year, with Whatcom County among the areas approved for support.

The declaration, signed on April 11, 2026, comes in response to severe weather that hit the state between December 5 and December 19, 2025. The storms brought a combination of heavy rain, strong winds, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that caused widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and local communities.

With Whatcom County included in the declaration, residents who experienced damage or losses may now be eligible for federal assistance. This can include financial help for temporary housing, support for home repairs, and access to low-cost loans for property losses that were not covered by insurance. Officials advise that those affected should first go through their insurance providers before seeking federal assistance.

Local governments in Whatcom County are also eligible for Public Assistance funding, which helps cover the cost of emergency response efforts and repairs to roads, utilities, and other public infrastructure damaged during the storms. Certain nonprofit organizations may also qualify under this program.

The declaration covers a large portion of Washington, including counties such as King, Skagit, Snohomish, Pierce, Thurston, and several others, along with multiple tribal nations throughout the state that were impacted by the same storm system.

Federal officials say this approval is an important step in the recovery process, allowing both individuals and local agencies to begin accessing resources needed to rebuild and recover. Additional areas or types of assistance could still be added as further damage assessments are completed.

A federal coordinating officer has been assigned to oversee recovery operations in the affected areas, working alongside state and local agencies as the process moves forward.

For many in Whatcom County and across northwest Washington, the announcement brings a level of relief after months of dealing with storm-related damage. Recovery efforts are expected to continue in the coming weeks as more residents begin applying for assistance and local jurisdictions assess long-term repair needs.

There’s a program called “Land Back” being quietly supported by several Whatcom County Council members—and if you own property, you should be paying attention.

This isn’t being widely discussed, but it has real implications for land ownership, property rights, and how land could be managed or transferred in the future. Whether you agree with it or not, transparency matters—and right now, that’s lacking.

If you live in Whatcom County and own property, now is the time to get informed, ask questions, and make your voice heard. Decisions like this shouldn’t happen quietly or without public awareness.

Stay engaged.
