Likely thanks in part to the late Tom Smith of Smith’s Beach near Eastville and his extensive breed-and-release program, have seen some elusive wild turkeys 🦃 🦃every Spring and Fall.

A flock of wild turkeys stomping through a yard in October isn't just looking for acorns. It's holding an election.

In fall, turkeys split up by age and s*x. Hens and their grown daughters band together, and several families often merge into one big flock. Young males — jakes — form their own gangs. Older toms keep to themselves.

And all of those groups are sorting out the same question: who's in charge?

🦃 How to read the squabbles:

- Strutting — tail fanned, feathers puffed, wings dragging. "Look how big I am"
- Purring and yelping — rising tension
- Chest bumps and neck wrestling — two birds lock heads and push
- Wing beating — loud slaps that sound like a rug being shaken out
- The kee-kee — a whistled call from this year's young birds, trying to find their flock

It looks dramatic, but it's mostly bluff, and it settles fast. The order they set now carries into winter, when flocks get even bigger, and into spring, when rank decides who gets to breed.

🌙 At dusk, they fly up into big trees to roost for the night, safe from coyotes and foxes. At dawn, listen for the crashing as they come back down.

They're not fighting over the yard. They're picking a boss. 🍂

🛍️ Vendor tents filled with local goods and treats.
🎃 Pumpkins ready for painting and decorating.
