Most of my inspection work is in Northern New Jersey, where fireplaces are still fairly common. I recommend regular cleaning of all fireplace flues to keep them in good working order. The technology mentioned in this article is very similar to what is used here - aerial drones, endoscopes, and HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaners.

The centuries-old trade is enjoying something of a revival, partly driven by rising energy costs. Today’s sweeps use new tools and technology.

I had the opportunity yesterday to inspect a home built in 1890. Here in the attic you can see the pegged timber frame with the carpenters markings. The marks were made to keep the parts in order as they were transported from the ground to the structure.

Nantucket hit hard times in the 1840’s as a massive fire, the California gold rush, and the Civil War diminished the whaling industry and a good portion of the island’s population. By the 1870’s though creative efforts were being made to start and grow tourism to the island. One of my favorites is the creation of the Bluff Walk from ‘Sconset town to the Sankaty Head lighthouse.
