Summer always seems to fly by, and this one definitely did! Looking back through pictures, it looks like we spent most of it fishing! Oliver has really gotten into it this year, and after getting a new rod for his birthday, we explored fishing spots all around Madison and beyond. He caught some pretty impressive bass and pike along the way, and is always striving for a personal best.
We also spent a week up in Eagle River with a big group of family, staying on the lake, cruising around on the pontoon, tubing, fishing, and hanging out with cousins. Add in beach days, campfires, fireworks, ice cream runs, canoe trips and plenty of time at home with Ruby, and we packed quite a bit into the summer.
Oliver had a great summer with Scouts too, including camp at Token Creek where they tried archery, BB guns, slingshots, climbing walls and all kinds of adventures. He’s back in school, likes his teacher and is off to a great start!
I managed to squeeze in a little fun of my own. One highlight was competing in a jerk chicken cook-off at a Chicken and Reggae party with live music, DJs and plenty of grilling and smoking. I made my own spice blend, came away runner-up, and I’m pretty proud of that jerk!
Of course, mixed into all of this was plenty of real estate, rental turnovers and property projects. Our garden started out in June looking beautiful and completely weed-free. By September, nature had reclaimed it and we were back to full jungle status. Apparently we haven't learned much from last year!
Now fall is here, school is back in session and things are settling into a different rhythm. I love the cooler weather, although I’d happily keep the long summer days if I could.
Looking back, I’m mostly just thankful for all the time with family and friends. There’s always work to do and something going on, but the simple days fishing, hanging around the fire, playing guitar, taking walks or being chased around the house with Nerf guns are pretty tough to beat.
Here’s to a great fall and everything still to come this year!
