On May 16th, Santa's Land Fun Park & Zoo in the little mountain town of Cherokee, North Carolina will reopen for the warm seasons and celebrate its 60th Anniversary of being one of the most memorable places to spend a day in the Smoky Mountains! At this little mountain fun park, you walk into a place where Christmas cheer is part of the fun all year long. One of the first things many families do is stop by Santa’s cozy mountain cabin to meet Santa himself before heading out to enjoy the rides. You can hop on the famous "Rudicoaster", take a spin on the Ferris wheel or carousel, ride the park’s train, or drift around the water on paddle boats...all while viewing a number of Christmas and non-Christmas decorations that make the park that much more fun! The zoo is another big part of the park, where you can see animals like deer, bears, kangaroos, lemurs, and colorful birds, and in some areas you can even feed them. Kids also enjoy the magic shows, arcade games, and the petting areas. When it’s time to eat, snack stands serve up pizza, burgers, sweet treats, and homemade fudge. With small gift shops and cheerful music playing around the park, Santa’s Land keeps the feel of a classic family-run park that has been making memories for generations.

One of the most interesting hidden sights in the North Carolina mountains was the “Waterrock K**b Plane Crash” on Waterrock K**b just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the visitor center at milepost 451.2, you could hike the steep half-mile trail to the summit, then slip onto an unofficial, root-covered path that led toward Browning K**b. Just below the ridge, scattered across a sharp mountainside, sat the wreckage of a twin-engine Cessna that crashed on Thanksgiving Day in 1983. The cockpit shell, twisted metal, part of a wing, wires, and bits of upholstery were still wrapped around trees and half-buried in leaves. The engines had been removed, but much of the plane remained, slowly rusting in the forest. The crash was blamed on heavy fog and pilot error as the plane flew too low in poor weather...and unfortunately both occupants of the plane perished in the crash. While folks used to hike here and view the eerie remains of the plane wreckage...growing crowds, vandalism, safety risks, and damage to rare high-elevation plants led the National Park Service to airlift and remove the remaining wreckage a couple of years ago. That said, you can still hike the Waterrock K**b trail to one of the most incredible overlooks in the Western North Carolina mountains...but you'll see no hint of the old plane crash here these days!
