At milepost 422.4 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a sheer granite dome rises out of the mountains that Cherokee legend says belongs to a giant named Judaculla. 🏔️

According to that tradition, Judaculla, known in Cherokee as Tsul'kălû, was a slant-eyed giant who used the cave inside Devil's Courthouse as his own private dancing chamber, holding court over the surrounding mountains long before any trail led hikers up to the overlook. The rock face isn't just legend today, either. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs beyond the overlook wall, and wildlife officials ask hikers to stay back and keep the area undisturbed so the birds keep returning, meaning the mountain is still quietly doing what it's always done, holding something back from easy view.

There's something fitting about a place with this much folklore attached to it also being one of the few spots left where a genuinely wild bird still nests undisturbed. 🦅
