That plain little water closet has more potential than you think. 👀✨
These are different ways I’d give this space a whole new look for under $500 each, assuming you’re doing the work yourself.
Small spaces are some of my favorites to update. Playing with color, texture, pattern, depth, and lighting can make a huge difference without an expensive renovation.
Here’s how to create a similar look:
🤎 Start with a color palette. Choose a wall color, a wood tone, and a finish for your fixtures so everything feels connected.
🖼️ Add depth with picture frame molding. Plan your layout first and keep the spacing consistent. Caulk the seams and fill nail holes before painting for a clean finish.
🪵 Use wood paneling to bring in warmth and texture. One thoughtfully placed accent wall can give the room plenty of character.
💡 Pay attention to lighting. A pretty fixture makes a difference, but the room still needs enough light to feel comfortable. Have hardwired fixtures installed properly.
🌿 Add a couple of shelves and carefully chosen accessories. A small plant, framed artwork, or a decorative basket can finish the space without making it feel crowded.
The biggest things to avoid:
🚫 Overcrowding the walls. You don’t need molding, paneling, wallpaper, and shelves on every surface. Give your favorite feature room to stand out.
🚫 Hanging shelves where someone could bump their head or blocking access to the toilet tank.
🚫 Painting over dirty walls or installing paneling over moisture damage. Prep and repairs come first.
🚫 Choosing materials that are difficult to wipe clean. This is still a bathroom, so practical finishes matter.
🚫 Spending the whole budget on decor and forgetting paint, adhesive, trim, hardware, and installation supplies.
This is one of my favorite ways to improve a home: work with the space you already have and make every detail count. A small room can feel polished and full of personality with a few thoughtful changes.
