Free radon test kits available
The Delaware County Health Department (DCHD) is making free radon test kits available to residents through its Test and Go public health kiosks, expanding access to simple tools that help families protect themselves against preventable health risks. Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless radioactive gas found throughout Pennsylvania and it is commonly present in homes across the county. Testing is the only way to know whether radon is present at elevated levels inside a home. DCHD recommends residents test homes regularly, particularly before and after home renovations or repairs and especially when converting basements into sleep quarters or living spaces. New PHFA program – K-DATE (Keystone Due at Time of Expiration)

For those of you serving the first time homebuyer population in Pennsylvania, it’s important to note the introduction of a new program through PHFA. The K-FIT program which provides up to 5% in down payment assistance to borrowers, is still in place. With K-FIT, the downpayment assistance is “forgiven” at 10% per year over a 10 year period, so that eventually the borrower no longer owes anything back if they retain the home and don’t refi for 10 years. The new KDATE program is different – it offers similar downpayment assistance (5% or even up to 8% for lower priced homes). The rules for qualifying are similar – first time homebuyer, household income requirements, etc – but this downpayment assistance is not forgivable. It is paid back in full when the home is sold or refinanced. In exchange for that, KDATE is offered at a lower rate than K-FIT.
