The highest point in the lower 48 just happens to be 87 miles from the lowest point. 😲

Drive across this stretch of California and you climb from scorching salt flats and high desert basins to alpine peaks so suddenly it might feel like changing planets.

That’s right—Mount Whitney’s 14,505-foot (4,421 m) summit and Death Valley’s Badwater Basin at –282 feet (–86 m) sit astonishingly close together.

With only 87 miles (140 km) between them as the crow flies, these two extremes aren’t just elevation opposites—they’re practically neighbors.

And that unlikely proximity is what makes this corner of the American West so intriguing.

Bikers and ultramarathoners have taken notice, too.

The route from the lowest point to the highest has become a legendary endurance challenge—one that climbs nearly 15,000 feet and crosses two entire mountain ranges on the way from blistering desert to cool alpine air.

Amazing!
