South Gateway Apartments provides student housing for the Mammoth Lakes campus of Cerro Coso Community College. The Mammoth Lakes Foundation was created in 1989 by the founder of Mammoth Mountain, Dave and Roma McCoy, and a few of their friends. The goal was to be the catalyst in bringing higher education and the arts to the Eastern Sierra. At the time, local high school graduates and residents ha
d few choices when it came to higher education. Higher education in Mammoth started very humbly with a couple of instructors, a handful of students, and a rented space in the Rite Aid Shopping Center. Cerro Coso Community College had been offering classes wherever they could find space, usually at the high school or in empty conference rooms. In 1992, the Foundation influenced the annexation of Inyo and Mono Counties into the Kern Community College District, making the area eligible for state funding of college facilities. In 1996, Edison Hall was built in the South Gateway section of Mammoth Lakes as a visible start to campus development. In 1998, the Foundation secured funding for the Dave & Roma McCoy Learning Center, which opened to students in 2003. In 1999, the Foundation completed a seven-year land exchange with U.S. And in 2008, the 35-unit South Gateway Student Apartments opened. In 2018, the Mammoth Lakes Foundation partnered with Mammoth Hospital to co-own and operate the South Gateway Apartments to provide housing for healthcare employees in addition to students attending Cerro Coso Mammoth campus. The Mammoth Lakes Foundation is pleased to offer up to six (6) awards of student Housing Scholarships on a semester basis when housing space is available. The purpose of this housing scholarship is to support local Mono County residents (1-year minimum) and Inyo/Mono County high school graduates who are in need of additional living support while attending classes at the Mammoth Campus of Cerro Coso Community College to achieve their higher education goals. Students are awarded scholarships based on academic achievement, community involvement, demonstration of financial aid needs, and an in-person interview.
