Wow, what a rollercoaster ride it has been this summer. This picture is the last time we were all together; May 14, 2023. My husband missed all of his son's senior year mikestones and college send off. I got Riley moved into college this past weekend which was exciting but also bittersweet for me as I miss him terribly.
Today, as I sit in my husband's hospital room waiting for his return from surgery, I am overwhelmed with emotions. Worried about him, our finances, how we are going to manage and afford all the medical care he will require moving forward, and how to navigate all the forms necessary for permanent disability and handicap status.
The surgical plan today was to amputate the front 3rd of his right foot and his left leg below the knee. Apparently he has Peripheral Artery Disease (news to me) which caused excessive bleeding during the procedure on his right foot. Therefore, they simply debreeded his left foot for now so as not to cause more blood loss which could have caused another heart attack and/or death. They are hopeful that they can move forward with the left leg amputation in the next 24-48 hours after he has had some time to recover and begin healing.
The doctors explained that looking forward beyond the surgery, Kevin would be in rehab for 3-6 weeks (possibly longer) depending on how quickly he heals and how comfortable he gets with crutches. They would prefer to send him home in a wheelchair but unfortunately our home is too small to accomodate that type of mobility. His doctors said it would probably be at least 3 months before Kevin would be likely to walk on his own again. So we will have to see how he progresses and heals before getting fitted with his prosthetics.
As hard as this is for Kevin, Riley and myself, it's comforting to know my husband is surrounded by so many caring health professionals.
