Monday Memory: Manlius Eddition

Before it was known as Memorial Day, communities across America observed “Decoration Day” — a day dedicated to honoring fallen Civil War soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers, flags, and wreaths.

In Manlius, NY in 1915, Decoration Day was both a solemn remembrance and a community tradition. Residents gathered along East Seneca Street to watch veterans, civic groups, schoolchildren, and bands march through the village in patriotic procession. Homes and storefronts were dressed in bunting and flags as the community paused to remember those who gave their lives in service to the country.

These photos capture a glimpse of that tradition over 100 years ago — a moment when remembrance brought the entire village together. 🇺🇸
