As a licensed Texas Realtor, I follow the Fair Housing Act and Texas Fair Housing laws. These laws protect certain classes of people and prevent agents from commenting on the demographic makeup of a neighborhood.
Protected classes include:
• Race
• Color
• Religion
• S*x
• National origin
• Familial status
• Disability
Because of this, Realtors cannot legally comment on who lives in an area, whether a neighborhood is “safe,” or the household makeup of a community.
If you would like to research information about an area, here are official public resources you can use:
Crime Data
• FBI Crime Data Explorer – https://cde.ucr.fbi.gov
• Texas Department of Public Safety – https://www.dps.texas.gov
S*x Offender Registry
• Texas Public Registry – https://publicsite.dps.texas.gov/S*xOffenderRegistry
Demographics
• U.S. Census Bureau – https://data.census.gov
School Ratings
• Texas Education Agency – https://tea.texas.gov
City Information
• Your local city website for zoning, parks, and community plans
My job is to help you evaluate properties, market data, and contract strategy while staying compliant with federal and Texas law. If you ever have questions about how Fair Housing works, I’m happy to explain it!
