An unsecured water heater is one of the most common things we write up in this region.

We're in earthquake country, and a full tank is heavy, and in a strong shake it can tip and pull the gas or water line off the top.

Straps are inexpensive and simple to install. What we usually find is one of three things: no straps at all, only one strap where there should be two, or straps loose enough that the tank can still shift.

Two straps, installed tight, and the job is done.

When did you last test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?

Most people don't think about them until a holiday dinner sets one off. The batteries are worth checking now, before furnace and fireplace season gets going.

Press the test button on each one this week. If any of them are more than ten years old, it's time to replace the whole unit, not only the battery.
